The Miami Hurricanes (3-0, 1-0 road) have the college football world buzzing right now. Through the first three weeks, the Hurricanes are starting to make people believe the “U” is finally back. However, they haven’t quite faced a test like they they will on Saturday as the travel to Clemson (3-0, 2-0 home) to take on the top team in the country, the Clemson Tigers. The last time these two teams squared off was the 2017 ACC championship game, a game in which Clemson was 38-3. In fact, in the last two matchups between these two, the total score is 96-3 in favor of Clemson.
The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST in Clemson. The oddsmakers have the Tigers as 14- point home favorites.
What to Know- Miami Hurricanes
The Hurricanes have looked fantastic in their first three games of the season, led by an offense averaging 43.3 points. That number even increases in ACC play, as they have averaged 49.5 points in wins against Louisville and Florida State. The biggest reason for the offensive play has been the play of quarterback D’Eriq King.
The Houston transfer has been everything Hurricanes fans could have hoped for, as he has thrown for 736 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions. He also has shown the ability to make plays with his feet, where he is averaging 5.6 yards per carry. King and running back Cam’ron Harris (311 yards and five touchdowns) have helped keep opposing defenses guessing the entire season.
King does a tremendous job of distributing the ball, and making defenses have to worry about multiple guys. Eight receivers this year already have five receptions.
The defense has been just as good this year, and is coming off a dominating victory against Florida State. The unit allowed only 10 points, and forced three turnovers. They do a tremendous job of flying around to the ball, and they will have to do that against a great Clemson team.
What to Know- Clemson Tigers
Entering the season, the Tigers were the clear No. 1 team, and they have done nothing to dispel that ranking.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence has thrown for 848 yards and seven touchdowns in three games, while completing 73.3 percent of his passes. Most important for Clemson fans though is that he hasn’t thrown an interception. That was something that really hurt him early in the year last season, as he was trying to force the ball too much.
When it comes to playmakers, Lawrence has the very best in his running back.
Travis Etienne (243 yards and two touchdowns) is the best running back in college football. He hasn’t put up extremely high numbers so far in the season, but he will. The guy scores touchdowns in almost every game that he plays, and in games like this, he brings it to another level.
Like Miami, Clemson has a nice group of wide receivers, with Amari Rodgers (12 catches, 206 yards and three touchdowns) leading the way. Etienne is also just as likely to score on a pass as a run.
The defense of Clemson is going to be the biggest challenge for Miami. The Tigers boast future nfl players at all three levels, especially on their defensive line. How the Hurricanes can block the front four will go a long way in determining how this game goes.
The pick is in
There is no doubt that college football is better when the Miami Hurricanes are competing for championships. Coach Manny Diaz has done a great job of getting his team ready to compete, and they are getting close to being a true contender.
However, Saturday is going to be a reminder they aren’t there yet. Clemson hasn’t played the toughest schedule yet, and you can bet the Tigers are chomping at the bit to remind the Hurricanes where they fall in the ACC pecking order.
We believe the Tigers win this game, and win it in dominating fashion.
