The Drama Surrounding Dwayne Haskins: From Ohio State to Unemployed
Dwayne Haskins, who was Washington’s first-round pick in 2019, is officially unemployed. The team released Dwayne Haskins on December 28th after maskless pictures of the 23-year-old at a strip club circulated around the internet.
Haskins’ had a meteoric rise to the top of the football world, but he wasn’t there for a very long time. Haskins is now searching for a job after his strip club photos were leaked. His downfall was even quicker than his rise to the top.
Here is how Dwayne Haskins went from Ohio State to unemployed.
Dwayne Haskins – The Ohio State Star
Haskins stepped foot on campus in Columbus in 2016. Haskins had to wait two years before he took over the starting job at Ohio State. In 2016, Haskins redshirted for the Buckeyes. The following season he backed up JT Barrett.
As the second-string quarterback in 2017, Haskins made eight appearances. He completed 40 of 57 passing attempts for 565 yards with four touchdowns. Haskins didn’t do much in his first two seasons, but expectations were high for the 6’4” quarterback going into year three.
In 2018, Dwayne Haskins became the man under center in Columbus. He started all 14 of the team’s games over the course of the season leading the Buckeyes to a 13-1 record. Haskins made his way into the Ohio State record books by taking the top spot in total offense in a season (4939), total offense in a game (477), and total passing yards in a game (470).
Haskins completed over 70% of his passes in 2018 and racked up 4,831 yards through the air. He accounted for 54 total touchdowns. Ohio State has had some phenomenal quarterbacks over the years, but Haskins sure made his mark on the program.
Dwayne Haskins had two seasons of eligibility left following 2018, but the First Team All-Big Ten selection elected to forgo his final years in Columbus and declare for the NFL Draft.
Dwayne Haskins – Welcome to the NFL
Haskins received a first-round draft grade in 2018 which ultimately made him leave Ohio State. The Washington Football Team (Washington Redskins), selected Haskins 15th overall in 2019.
Haskins backed up Case Keenum for the majority of his first season in the NFL. Case Keenum was an average performer in most of his starts in 2019. Haskins was sprinkled in at times early in his rookie season.
Haskins first start came in Week 9 against the Buffalo Bills. The team stuck with their first round pick the rest of the season. The rookie claimed his first victory as a starter in Week 12 against the Detroit Lions. The former Ohio State star was 119 of 203 for 1,365 yards with a 7:7 TD to INT ratio in his first NFL season.
Dwayne Haskins – The Downfall
Haskins had a tremendous offseason in preparation for the 2020 NFL slate. He was named Captain of the Washington Football Team. However, the beginning of the season didn’t go in favor of the 23-year-old quarterback.
Haskins was sent to the bench after Washington’s 1-3 start. Rumors out of the locker room suggested that he was benched because of his poor performance, work ethic and attitude.
In October, Haskins broke the league’s COVID protocol by inviting his family friend to stay at the team’s hotel in New York prior to a contest against the Giants. Breaking COVID protocol was one of the worst things you could do during the 2020 NFL season. The league was not willing to bend in this area.
Haskins came in off the bench in Week 14 and then started in Week 15 following an injury to Alex Smith. Haskins already had a lot of red flags circling around his head, but all hell broke loose the night following Washington’s Week 15 contest.
Dwayne Haskins – The Strip Club
After Washington’s Week 15 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Dwayne Haskins went out on the town and was seen maskless at a strip club. A player being photographed at a strip club wouldn’t be a big deal in a typical season. This would’ve most likely been a slap on the wrist.
However, 2020 hasn’t been the host of a normal NFL season. There were multiple Instagram stories posted of Dwayne Haskins at the DC strip club. Ladies were wearing Haskins’ jersey around the quarterback. Nobody had any masks on in the photos or videos.
Haskins would make one more appearance in a Washington uniform before being released by the organization. In less than two years, Dwayne Haskins went from Rose Bowl MVP to first-round NFL bust. I give Haskins’ a lot of credit because that’s not an easy thing to do!
Haskins will have a job in the NFL next season. Multiple teams have expressed interest in the 23-year-old troublemaker. However, he will need to prove that he has reputable character to make it as an NFL quarterback for years to come.
