PointsBet Ready to Launch in Pennsylvania
The PointsBet Sportsbook is set to launch in the state of Pennsylvania on Thursday, Feb. 10, adding another big operator to an already crowded market. PointsBet is a company that is based out of Australia, but it has since built a US headquarters in Denver, Colorado.
The timing of this launch is significant as it will allow the operator to accept wagers in time for Super Bowl LVI. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved PointsBet for a license last month, and there was a three-day soft launch earlier this week.
To enter the state, PointsBet was able to utilize its current partnership with Penn National Gaming. Penn National also offers the Barstool Sportsbook in Pennsylvania, but it still had another online skin to use.
PointsBet also has a partnership with NBC Sports, which should allow it to become a household name in the state of Pennsylvania. NBC Sports Philadelphia is home to the professional teams in that city, and PointsBet will have plenty of presence during live telecasts.
When the PointsBet Sportsbook goes live on Thursday, it will officially be the 10th different state to feature this online sportsbook. PointsBet just recently launched in New York as well after online betting became available.
Pennsylvania is a Massive Market
Pennsylvania has consistently been one of the five biggest sports betting markets over the past 12 months, but it has started to get passed up by other states. The total betting handle in 2021 for this state was $6.55 billion, an increase of more than 80 percent from 2020.
The state continues to benefit from this industry as well as the total sports betting revenue was $340.1 million in 2021. There is a huge tax rate in Pennsylvania, and few states come close to competing with this state in terms of tax revenue.
PointsBet Sportsbook will have some work to do as some of the online sportsbooks have been established for close to three years. On Thursday, PointsBet will become the 14th online sports betting option in the state.
PointsBet will become the 14th mobile online sports betting operator in Pennsylvania.
