UEFA EURO 2020 Switzerland vs Spain Betting Predictions
The first match of the quarter-finals is set and it is Switzerland vs Spain. Kickoff is in Saint Petersburg, Russia on July 2 at 12:00 pm EST. Spain is coming off an incredibly dramatic win over Croatia where they scored two goals in overtime after scoring three during the first ninety. Switzerland just had an ever more shocking win against France, where they scored two late goals and won it in penalties 5-4.
Both of these teams haven’t been in the greatest form as of late, and this is a great chance for either of them to enter the semi-finals which most analysts did not see coming. In the history of these two teams matching up, Spain has lost just one of the 22 total games. Will history come true, or will Switzerland turn the tide in favor of the Swiss?
Switzerland’s Ways to Win
Switzerland was surprised to win that game. That is certain. Switzerland did, however, work incredibly hard when the going got tough and grinded their way to a victory. All of these players have played long seasons and fatigue is definitely a factor in all of these games, so whoever comes alive in those last fifteen to twenty minutes is going to make a difference. Switzerland showed that, and they are going to need to do it again against Spain.
The Swiss defense needs to make their backline as compact as possible and attack the ball in the air. Spain has some decent height up front and have done a really good job of getting on the end of crosses and set pieces; they put Croatia under a lot of pressure this way.
Croatia, however, put Spain under a lot of pressure with 1v1’s and Switzerland have the capability to do the same. Switzerland need to be brave in the attack and challenge the Spanish backline. Embolo can use his physicality to wreak havoc in the attacking third, so long as he gets on the ball, Switzerland should have chances on the net.
Spain’s Ways to Win
Morata might finally have the confidence now to play his forward role with a little more tenacity and grit. Better yet, the entire Spanish team might have the confidence to make something happen. Croatia is their first really impressive result, although it came in a rollercoaster of a game.
Spain needs to find ways to take shots from anywhere in the box. They showed that they were really strong when they created a little space, shot, and followed up. This needs to be their game plan.
Get the ball to a wide area and either look to cross or play one quick pass to the top of the box and have a shot. Defensively, just make sure they know their assignments and play a complete game.
Switzerland vs Spain Prediction
Both of these teams had a little bit of luck go their way to make it to the quarter-finals. Switzerland beat a really tough French team and Spain beat a really tough Croatian side. This game is a bit of an unknown quantity.
Neither of these teams are threats to win the tournament, in my opinion. However, I think this Spanish team has enough of the experience and the talent—although it hasn’t clicked just yet—to move past Switzerland. Switzerland vs Spain will be a game of goals, though.
Prediction: Spain 3 – 2 Switzerland
