Los Angeles FC: Tale of the Tape
Form: L-W-D-W-W
Projected XI: Tomas Romero; Marco Farfan, Eddie Segura, Jesus Murillo, Moon-Hwan Kim; Eduard Atuesta, Latif Blessing, Jose Cifuentes; Carlos Vela, Raheem Edwards, Diego Rossi
LAFC (6-5-5) started the month of July by ripping off three straight wins, but they failed to win any of their last three matches. After a pair of draws to the Vancouver Whitecaps and Minnesota United, the Black and Gold sit tied for fifth in the Western Conference. They feel like a safe bet to make the MLS Playoffs, but to secure home-field advantage they’ll need to rev things up during the second half of the season.
Manager Bob Bradley will deploy a 4-3-3 formation with Tomas Romero in goal. The former Georgetown keeper will be making his eighth straight start after taking over in late June. He’ll be covered by the Colombian center-back pairing of Eddie Segura and Jesus Murillo. USNMT member Marco Farfan and South Korea national team member Moon-Hwan Kim. Farfan is one the best U21 players in the league, and he leads LAFC in tackles (48).
Eduard Atuesta heads the midfield for a third straight season. The 26-year old always leaves his prints on matches, and he leads LAFC with 1114 completed passes. Ecuador national team member Jose Cifuentes is having a good season for the Black and Gold. He’s tied for the team lead in goals (5) and he’s dished out three assists. Designated Players Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi both have five goals apiece, while the former has been a tear as of late, scoring a goal in each of the past four matches.
Sporting KC: Tale of the Tape
Form: D-D-L-W-W
Projected XI: Tim Melia; Luis Martins, Andreu Fontas, Ilie Sanchez, Jaylin Lindsey; Remi Walter, Gadi Kinda, Roger Espinoza; Khiry Shelton, Johnny Russell, Daniel Salloi
Prior to their uncharacteristic home loss to FC Dallas, Sporting KC (9-3-4) was on a five-match unbeaten streak, which included a 2-1 victory over LAFC. With road wins over the Seattle Sounders and the LA Galaxy, Kansas City looks like a contender in the Western Conference.
Head coach Peter Vermes will also come in out in a 4-4-3 formation with longtime Sporting keeper Tim Melia in goal. The veteran pairing of Luis Martins and Andreu Fontas highlights the backline. Fontas has been a key to KC’s success this season, as he leads the team in passes completed (1285) and tackles (24).
KC’s has a very balanced offensive attack, with five members scoring over two goals so far this year. Daniel Salloi has been very clinical and consistent this season. The sixth-year forward has scored a goal in six of his last nine appearances and he leads KC with four assists. Mexico national team member Alan Pulido scored six goals before his 2021 Gold Cup stint.
LAFC vs Sporting KC Prediction
This late-night battle at Banc of California Stadium will be a good one. LAFC is due a win after failing to secure one in three games, but Kansas City is one of the best teams in the league. Things won’t be easy for the home team, but with both squads conceding goals in four of their past five games, both teams to score feels like the same bet tonite. Sporting KC will be worth a look as underdogs, and over 2.5 goals could be a play as well.
