The Greatest Red River Subplot Ever?

Imagine Justin Field’s kid wearing maize and blue in 20 years, or Tua Tagovailoa Jr. leading the Auburn Tigers. Maybe we see a young Colt McCoy playing for Oklahoma. Saturday is a chance to see this situation play out.

Charles Thompson was a great quarterback at Oklahoma in the late 1980s. Thompson led Oklahoma to an Orange Bowl in 1987 and is forever a part of the Oklahoma family, despite a rough ending to his time in Norman.

However, Thompson might need to leave the Oklahoma family this weekend as his son will quarterback the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry.

Another plot line to what shapes up to be another great edition of Texas and Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.

Boomer Sooner???

Not only does Casey Thompson have bloodlines to the Sooners, he has strong recruiting ties to their program.

Oklahoma pushed hard to sign Thompson out of high school, but were unsuccessful. The story does not end there.

After a redshirt year at Texas, Casey Thompson entered the transfer portal. Oklahoma had another shot at him. In an interview with OU Insider, Charles Thompson let out a “bombshell” saying that “[Casey] actually enrolled at Oklahoma when he got into the portal.”

Charles talked his son out of the decision which led Casey to where he is now, the starting quarterback at the University of Texas.

Casey Thompson’s Thoughts

As a whole Casey Thompson has no hate in his heart for Oklahoma. He believes Texas is the best spot for him, and wants to focus on himself.

Even though Thompson never hated the Longhorns growing up, there will be plenty of people in his life rooting against him on Saturday.

“A few teachers and students said they would never support me if I went to Texas.” Thompson said he is only worried about the people who love and support him.

There is always a lot on the line when Oklahoma and Texas play one another, but the Thompson narrative adds a piece to the puzzle that some thought would never be seen.

Saturday’s Contest

As for the game itself, Saturday is a massive opportunity for both teams.

Texas has one loss on the season, on the road against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Yet, the Longhorns still have everything in front of them. A win on Saturday puts them in the driving seat in the Big 12, and with a good performance, could put Bijan Robinson in the Heisman conversation.

Saturday will also be head coach Steve Sarkisian’s first Red River Rivalry game and a chance to get started on the right foot with the Texas faithful.

Oklahoma remains undefeated, but has been unimpressive in most people’s eyes. The Sooners had high preseason expectations and have not looked the part of a national champion through five weeks. As is the case with any Texas Oklahoma game, Saturday is a chance to reverse a lot of the early season struggles.

Oklahoma is a 3.5 point favorite on Saturday.
