Starting QB Grayson McCall Out For Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers lose their QB for what could be the remainder of the season. How will Coastal Carolina respond?
Starting QB Grayson McCall Out For Coastal Carolina
The Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina University have gained many fans in recent years as their unapologetic and true to self program took the national spotlight in 2020 after having an undefeated regular season. One player who has been with the program since before that breakout season is stand out QB Grayson McCall.
Unfortunately for the Chanticleers McCall suffered a foot injury in last weeks’ 35-28 victory against Appalachian State. Earlier this week the news got worse as it came out that McCall would be out for 3-6 weeks which puts a sudden damper on Coastal Carolina’s season.
Chanticleers’ QB Situation
McCall got the starting job in 2020 in his second year. McCall put up impressive numbers right away in his first year as the starter McCall completed 172 of 250 for 2,488 yards throwing for 26 TDs to only 3 INTs. McCall has remained consistent putting up 27 TDs and only 3 INTs again the following year. This season he was on track to improve in every category having already thrown for 2,314 yards, 21 TDs, and 1 INT.
Coastal Carolina will now turn to Senior Bryce Carpenter to lead the offense. Carpenter has been with the Chanticleers since the 2018 season and though he has only seen limited action throughout his career he has respectable stats on paper.
He has completed 173 of 270 for 1,905 yards for 18 TDs and 5 INTs in his career and will look to lead this very good Chanticleers team. Oddsmakers may take a few weeks to adjust to the Coastal Carolina system with Carpenter under center, but on paper there aren’t many reasons to worry about Carpenter stepping in.
Coastal Carolina’s Season Forecast
The Chanticleers are 8-1 overall 5-1 in conference play with their lone loss being to Old Dominion a few weeks ago. Coastal Carolina’s offense is actively one of the best in the nation, ranking 33rd in points per game, 25th in yards per game, and 20th in yards per play.
Their running game is stellar with running backs CJ Beasley and Reese White combining for 959 yards on 180 attempts. Expect Bryce Carpenter to be active in the run game as well as he already has 80 rushing yards on 27 attempts this year.
Coastal Carolina’s last 3 games are against Southern Mississippi, Virginia, and James Madison. With Carpenter under center the Chanticleers are going to need to find the consistent success in the air they had with McCall. Coastal Carolina currently averages 9.3 yards a pass and a turnover margin of +1.
These are the key stats that will determine Carpenter’s success. If he is able to find the open receivers in the play action and protect the ball Coastal Carolina’s run game should be able to continue to lead the Chanticleers the success they’ve had to this point in the season.
