It feels like the 2021 football season just started and we’re already in week 8. This week will feature a ton of in-conference matchups between some of the best in football. In the Sun Belt, we have the undefeated Coastal Carolina Chanticleers going against the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers are coming off of a disappointing 41-13 blowout loss to conference rival Louisiana. Luckily for Appalachian State, this weekend they’ll be playing at home against the top dog in their conference.
Coastal Carolina is having one of the best seasons in their history. The Chanticleers are ranked 14 in the nation and are solidly in first place in the East Division and overall in the Sun Belt Conference. They’re coming off of a blowout 52-20 win over Arkansas State, and are looking to keep things rolling on Wednesday when they take on Appalachian State.

Appalachian State vs Coastal Carolina Prediction: Spread
Coastal Carolina is 4-1 against the spread this year and the fact that they’re only favored by a field goal in this one is a bit of a travesty. Led by quarterback Grayson McCall, the Chanticleers look to remain unbeaten and move up in the rankings in hopes of getting a few top 10 votes. They’re statistically better than Appalachian State in every meaningful category and should be favored by more than 3.5 points.
Appalachian State was having a solid year until they ran into Sun Belt West conference leader Louisiana last week. Quarterback Chase Brice had his worst game of the season going 15-26 for 133 and 2 interceptions. If they hope to keep this game close, Brice and the offense will have to be much better.

The Chanticleers have one of the best offenses in football and average 48.8 points per game and 554 yards per game. They also have a tough defense that only gives up 15 points per game.

Appalachian State is not quite as good on either end of the football this season, but at 4-2, they’re still a force to be reckoned with. The Mountaineers average 31.5 points per game while surrendering 23.5. They also average 436 yards per game and have a very well-balanced running and passing attack.

Both teams have good offenses and good defenses, but offense will win out in the end. Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice has struggled this year against tough defenses and expect him to struggle again on Wednesday.
Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is coming off one of his best games of the season. He threw for 365 yards and 4 touchdowns and expect more of the same from him and the Chanticleer running game. The Chanticleers average 263.5 yards rushing per game and the Mountaineers surrender 139.2 per game. Big points will be put up, but more so by Coastal Carolina.
