Why The Gonzaga Bulldogs is Winning the National Championship
Winning the National Championship : The Gonzaga Bulldogs are going to win the 2021 NCAA tournament championship and here’s why.
Mark Few took over as head coach of Gonzaga in 1999 since then they have won the West Coast Conference (WCC) regular season every year except twice and won the Conference Tournament 17 times.
The Bulldog’s success would always end after that because they couldn’t match up with the teams in the NCAA Tournament and would usually lose in the round of 16 cutting their March short.
Gonzaga has come into the NCAA Tournament as the top 3-seed seven times out of the 21 seasons with Few.
Three of the seven times the Zags were the Number 1-seed in 2013, 2017, 2019 and the team has only reached the final four once up until this year.
Many will say that Gonzaga plays in a weak conference and that’s why they get to the NCAA Tournament and lose but I don’t think that’s why. In order to win the tournament, teams have to have multiple star players and mature players to carry the team all the way.
The Zags haven’t had a full all-around team where everyone is contributing like they do this year.
If you take a look at the 2010-2011 UConn Huskies they came into the Big East Tournament as the No. 9-seed without a bye. Uconn won 11 straight games to win both the Big East and NCAA Tournament.
The Huskies had 9 regular season losses but when the NCAA Tournament came around Kemba Walker dominated and got help from Jeremy Lamb. Both of these players have excelled in the NBA and still are.
The Zags have produced NBA players before but none like Jalen Suggs the 6’4”, 205-pound point guard. He leads the Bulldogs offense and was in consideration for the Wooden Award.
This year Suggs has averaged 14.0 points per game, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists with an amazing shooting percentage of 50.2%.
Gonzaga has never had a one-and-done player such as Suggs. The best comparison would be Zach Collins who joined the pros in the NBA after his freshman season but Suggs is a much better all-around player and prospect.
Like Kemba Walker when he played for UConn, Suggs has great teammates that support him on the court. The starting forwards, sophomore Drew Timme and senior Corey Krispert are both averaging 19+ points per game.
Krispert was named as one of the five finalists for the Wooden Award.
The rest of the Zags squad is filled with intelligent players who know when to shoot when to pass and understand their strengths and weaknesses.
The 2021 Bulldogs led by Suggs, Timme, and Krispert have an immense amount of talent that the previous Zags teams did not have. When games get tight the Bulldogs can look to Suggs for leadership and with the help of Timme and Krispert they are unstoppable.
The Zags are more deserving than any other team to win the championship and need to prove the naysayers wrong. Gonzaga Bulldogs, 2021 NCAA Tournament Champions just sounds right and would be a great way to end the NCAA season.
