Western Michigan Football Preview 2022
Western Michigan Football Preview finds the Broncos in the middle-of-the-pack in the West Division of the MAC. Head coach Tim Lester has taken his alma mater to a bowl game in three of his five years Kalamazoo. One setback seems to be that he has never taken them to a division title. Lester is 37-25 in his time as their head coach.
The 2022 Broncos will be looking for freshman Jack Salopek to guide the team from the quarterback position. The 6’1″ 185 lbs quarterback hails form Irwin, PA. at Norwin High School, where he set school records for career yards (6,150), career touchdowns (40) and yards in a season (2,231). He will experience competition for this spot from a transfer from Alabama in Stone Hollenbach and redshirt freshman Mareyohn Hrbowski along with sophomore Lucas Hartings.
The pass game will be the primary focus a young corp of inexperienced receivers hitting the field with Kaevion Mack and Anthony Sambucci being the targets for this upcoming season. The running backs appear to be junior Sean Tyler and La’Tarius Jefferson.
The defense is led by second-team ALL MAC linebacker Zaire Barnes. He led the team in tackles with 68 and will be the steady influence in the backfield. With him will be Corvin Moment. a third team all conference selection with 68 tackles. Another in the backfeld will be Ryan Selig and his 63 tackles in 2021. This combination will give the Broncos some much need experience and stability. The safety position finds Delano Ware and his 40 tackles returning as will Bricen Garner. Look for cornerback spots to go to Purdue transfer Anthony Romphf and Keni-H Lovely. As a team in 2021, the defense averaged 3.3 sacks per game and will look to better that in 2022.
The kicking game brings back punter Nick Mihalic. He was 9-for-11 on field goals and punted an average of 41.9 yards per attempt.

In 2021, the Broncos finished with a 6-5 record and was 4-4 in the conference. They opened up the season will a beating from the Michigan Wolverines and then shut out Illinois State at Waldo Stadium. Week 3 saw them squeeze out an important win on the road with a 47-44 victory at Pittsburgh. In conference play they lost to Ball State, Toledo, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan.
In 2022, they open at Michigan State and follow up on the road at Ball State before coming home to complete the series with Pittsburgh and back on the road to the west coast to play San Jose. week 5 has New Hampshire coming in and then it is all confeence play to finish the year. Look for this team to finish at 6-6 and 5-3 in conference play and go to the Quick Lane Bowl or Bahamas Bowl.
