Mercedes, Pierre Gasly, and the Temple of Speed: Betting News for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. The temple of speed. Home of the Ferrari Tifosi and the Italian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen, Red Bull, and the RB-18 will top the timing sheets all weekend, in what may seem like a foregone conclusion. However, there is more interesting news surrounding the Italian Grand Prix that will affect your Formula 1 betting for the Italian Grand Prix.
An Interesting Test For the W-13 and Lewis Hamilton
Reliability has been a significant story throughout the 2022 Formula 1 season so far. Ferrari, Red Bull Racing Powertrains, and Alpine/Renault-powered cars have suffered numerous issues and did not finish classifications. In contrast, the Mercedes-powered teams have had no reliability concerns this year. The first Mercedes-powered car will take a grid penalty for power unit penalties for the Italian Grand Prix.
After his first lap clash with Fernando Alonso during the Belgian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton will take grid penalties for new power unit components and start at the back of the grid at Monza. This should remove Hamilton from any potential qualifying odds and bets for the Italian Grand Prix qualifying session. However, starting from the back of the grid at Monza will be an interesting test for the problematic W-13 and might create an attractive bet on a top 6 finish for Hamilton.
The Mercedes W-13 has been the most perplexing car on the Formula 1 grid this season. Members of the Mercedes team seem never to know which W-13 will show up at any circuit. On circuits where the W-13 was projected to be strong, Mercedes have been perplexed by a lack of pace; at other times, the W-13 has shone on circuits where expectations were limited. Monza will prove an interesting test for the performance of the W-13 in the hands of Hamilton, starting from the back of the grid at Monza.
The big takeaway: the only actual betting pick on Lewis Hamilton is a top 6 finish in the Italian Grand Prix. The only question is will the W-13 and a new power unit give Hamilton the performance to cut through the field to the front of the grid?
Alpha Tauri And Pierre Gasly
Where do we start with Alpha Tauri and Pierre Gasly? Gasly is currently the focal point of the Alpine driver’s market story. Alpine and Red Bull have agreed to terms for Gasly’s release on the condition that IndyCar’s Colton Herta is granted an FIA Super License and is released by Andretti Motorsport in IndyCar and McLaren in Formula 1 to replace Gasly as Alpha Tauri.
Gasly was held out of Thursday’s official F1 activities with an illness. The Alpha Tauri has the Red Bull Powertrains/Honda power unit, giving it a straight-line speed advantage over most cars on the grid. Before this illness, Gasly would have been an excellent pick to make it to Qualifying 3 and a top 10 finish. Monza and the Italian Grand Prix was the location of Gasly’s only Grand Prix victory. It will take an extraordinary set of circumstances for Gasly to charge through the field for a repeat surprise finish, especially after his announced illness and subsequent removal from official F1 activities. Gasly is someone to watch closely during Free Practice sessions if you are planning on making a bet on Gasly.
The Italian Grand Prix takes place from September 9-11 from the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Monza, Italy.
