Pennsylvania Derby Quick Picks
Hello and welcome to concise Pennsylvania Derby quick picks! The $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (G1) for 3-year-olds at PARX attracted an accomplished field of nine 3-year-old colts with the scratch of Medina Spirit.
The nine-furlong Grade 1 event isn’t a 2021 Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, but most Pennsylvania Derby winners compete in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Carded as race 12, of 13, the post time for the Pennsylvania Derby is 5:49 PM ET. The track will be fast.

Let’s take a quick look at the colts, who are most likely to hit the board.
#7 Hot Rod Charlie (5-2)
You have to love Hot Rod Charlie’s spirit and how honest he is. The Doug O’Neil trainee shows up and fights every time. He gutted out a win over Mandaloun In the Haskell Stakes (G1) but came over on Midnight Bourbon in the process, causing that one to fall. As a result, Hot Rod Charlie was disqualified to last. Hot Rod Charlie is one of the most accomplished of this year’s 3-year-old crop. Win contender.
#8 Midnight Bourbon (5-1)
Midnight Bourbon returned from face-planting in the stretch of the Haskell Stakes none the worse for wear. In the Travers Stakes (G1), the Steve Asmussen trainee showed surprising tenacity against the best 3-year-old in the country, Essential Quality, fighting down the stretch and losing the victory by a neck. Win contender.
#2 Keepmeinmind (8-1)
Keepmeinmind has won only once in eleven career starts but has finished in the money five times. He’s consistent but has seen the tail end of Midnight Bourbon and Hot Rod Charlie all year. The Robertino Diodoro earned a career-best speed figure last out. Exotics.
#3 Speaker’s Corner (12-1)
Speaker’s Corner ran huge in his 3-year-old debut, dominating allowance types at Saratoga by 5 1/4 lengths and earning a flashy 102 figure, and now gets a class test. Speaker’s Corner is by Street Sense out of a daughter of 2006 Breeders’ Cup Distaff heroine Round Pond, so nine furlongs is this guy’s angle. The lightly raced Bill Mott trainee fired a pre-race bullet five-furlong work, and all systems are a go. Exotics.
#10 Americanrevolution (15-1)
Americanrevolution won all three starts this year with improving speed figures each time. He found easy pickings among the New York state-bred set, and now the Todd Pletcher trainee is going to war against the elite. By Constitution, out of a daughter of Super Saver, Americanrevolution is bred to improve with maturity, and he’s already a winner at nine furlongs. Exotics.
Pennsylvania Derby Quick Picks
Weyburn may keep Midnight Bourbon busy on the front end while Hot Rod Charlie cools his engines behind the pair until they hit the stretch. Neither pacesetter is speed crazy, so they may slow things down in the middle of the race.
The promising Speaker’s Corner and Americanrevolution are intriguing longshots, and the odds are worth a play. Keepmeinmind should be included if you are using box trifectas or superfectas.
