Soccer: La Liga And Serie A Title Race
This weekend in Europe marks the last matchday across the major soccer leagues. With the seasons coming to an end, all eyes will be on tight races in two leagues.
Spanish La Liga Standings
In the Spanish La Liga the title will be decided on the last day. Atletico Madrid sits at the top of the table with 83 points, while their cross city rival, Real Madrid is right behind them with 81 points and will need Atletico to slip up on the last day if they want to raise La Liga trophy. Real Madrid looks to be out of luck though, Atletico plays 19th place Valladolid who are winless over their last five matches. Real Madrid finish the season playing 7th place Villarreal and will need a win paired with a loss by Atletico. Barcelona sits in third place with 76 points and while they did lock up a Champions League spot they no longer are in contention to win the league title this year. With the future of Lionel Messi at the club in doubt, Barcelona’s future looks bleak.
Italian Serie A Standings
In the Italian Serie A Inter Milan has already secured the league title, but the race for the final two Champions League spots will come down to the last day of the season. Inter and Atalanta have already locked up two of the four spots; that leaves AC Milan, Napoli, and Juventus to fight for the final two spots. As it currently stands Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus would miss out on the Champions League and will need AC Milan or Napoli to drop points during the final week. AC Milan will face second place Atalanta, but it remains to be seen what type of squad Atalanta will field with a Champions League spot already secured. Napoli will play mid table side Verona and Juventus finish off with 11th place Bologna.
Are we seeing the end of an era? World soccer has been dominated by Messi and Ronaldo for a number of years with those two players always jockeying for the title of the best player in the world. But both players are now in their 30s and the dominant grip they’ve had on world soccer seems to be fading. Both players failed to reach the Champions League semi finals this year and neither of them will be in contention for a league title this season as well. That along with the risk that Ronaldo may miss out on the Champions League next season may signal that their reign is over and players such as Mbappe and Haaland will take their turn competing for the title of the best player in the world.
Many times heading into the last week of the season title races and Champions League spots are already wrapped up so there isn’t much excitement. This year will provide excitement all the way down to the final whistle. Will Atletico finish the job and be crowned champions of Spain? Will Ronaldo and Juventus be able to sneak into a Champions League spot? We’ll find out this weekend as Europe’s top leagues come to a finale.
