Mike Wilbon Wants Bears GM Ryan Pace Fired After Andy Dalton Signing
Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser hold Pardon the Interruption, a daily show on ESPN that discusses many of the key topics in sports. Wilbon, a native of Chicago, is a Bears fan, and he doesn’t like what he has been seeing from the Bears the past couple of years, but after the start of this offseason, it appears that he can no longer handle the front office and coaching decisions.
By no means is Wilbon the first person disgruntled with the decisions the Bears are making; he simply has a massive platform that he can air his frustration. The Chicago Bears have made plenty of questionable decisions in recent years but have continued to keep General Manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy in charge.
Russell Wilson to the Bears?
Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has expressed his displeasure with the Seahawks organization and their inability to provide him with support on the offensive line. Wilson has not demanded or requested a trade, but he did list the Cowboys, Saints, and Bears as his desired destinations if a trade were to go through.
“I’m angry about the Bears. I told you they were never going to get Russ out of Seattle because the G.M. isn’t competent enough to do that, and they might not have wanted to give him up anyway in Seattle,” Wilbon said.
Reports this offseason said that the Bears were going to try very hard to acquire Wilson, and it is said that they offered upwards of three first-round picks and two starters, but ultimately the Seahawks were not interested in trading Wilson.
Moving on from Mitchell
The Bears decided to move on from former No. 2 overall draft pick quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Trubisky signed a one-year $2.5 million deal with the Buffalo Bills taking himself out of the spotlight and giving him time to develop under star Josh Allen. “Ryan Pace chose Mitchell Trubisky in the draft; he moved up to get him, ahead of guys named Watson and Mahomes,” Wilbon said.
Without a doubt, this is a massive blunder, but now Pace has decided to move on from the much younger Trubisky and add veteran Andy Dalton. “This is a disaster, and it doesn’t mean that Dalton is the worst guy in the league, and this guy Ryan Pace should be fired. [Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace] are a disaster, and they have led to ruin the Chicago Bears. The Bears aren’t always great, but they are not this incompetent; this is awful,” Wilbon said.
Dalton is a former three-time pro bowler and longtime starting quarterback in Cincinnati. He signed a one-year deal in Dallas a year ago to back up Dak Prescott, but after a season-ending ankle injury to Prescott, Dalton stepped in as the starter. In Dallas, Dalton totaled 216 completions for 2,170 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dalton led the Cowboys to a 4-5 record, and they did not make the playoffs.
Where to Next
The Bears seem to be in a bit of dismay this offseason and will need to upgrade their team in the draft. Dalton was decent with Dallas last year and will need more weapons than just wide receiver Allen Robinson to succeed. The calling card for the Bears has almost always been their defense, and with stars like Khalil Mack, Roquan Smith, and Akeem Hicks, Chicago needs to put up points. It will be interesting to see if the Bears decide to invest in a young quarterback during the draft. In today’s NFL, it is rare to see teams sign older quarterbacks without Super Bowl pasts and name them starters.
