theScore Bet has officially launched in Iowa as of February 16th, 2021. Iowa launched sports wagering earlier than any of its Midwest counterparts, but the state has taken a slow approach to opening up the industry. Legalized sports betting first opened up in August of 2019 but with a specific requirement that all players must first register and participate in traditional brick and mortar casinos.
The idea behind this approach was meant to control and monitor the new industry while making any changes if necessary to close up loopholes. As opposed to other regulatory practices that are usually playing catch up. On January 1st of 2021 the requirement for players to register and participate in a casino expired, now even a rural resident of Iowa can bet on the Hawkeyes to cover from their home.
Iowans will certainly be utilizing the app in the coming weeks. The Iowa Hawkeys men’s basketball team is ranked no. 11 and awaiting the start of March Madness. With a large fan favorite team like the Iowa Hawkeyes bettors can ride the wave or look for easy fades.
Altogether, Iowans and visitors to the state bet over $149.52 million in the month of January. That is an increase of $40 million and up 30% from the previous month of December. With the requirement that bettors place bets in person ending, expect the number to continue rising especially with March Madness beginning in a week.
The success that legalized betting has seen is catching the attention of other states. With huge losses of revenue due to COVID-19, legalizing sports betting is an easy and quick way for states to make up for the budget deficits. States like Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Washington all are prepared to pass legislation to legalize sports betting in the coming months.
