Oneida Casino Kickoffs Sports Betting in Wisconsin
The Oneida Casino will start taking sports betting wagers this week as there is a new amendment in the gaming compact. In the amendment, it states that “event wagering” includes sports betting, television shows like which director will win an Oscar, and professional drafts like the NFL Draft.
Sports Betting Becomes Legal in Wisconsin
Residents will be able to bet on an array of different sports in Wisconsin. When Louise Cornelius became the general manager of gaming at Oneida Casino, sports betting was one thing she hoped for. She went on to say, “We hope to provide an environment for our clientele that is clean and up-to-date with the best technology possible.”
Sports betting isn’t new in the state, but the legal aspect of it is. There are a lot of rules and regulations the casino must abide by to run the operation smoothly. The Oneida dubbed “Bingo Queens” Sandra Brehmer and Alma Webster was scheduled to make the legal sports wagers at the Oneida Nation Casino.
Brehmer and Webster started and operated the most profitable bingo games in the state before the tribes had monopolized their hold on the casinos. At the time the bingo games became one of the largest revenue generators for the state. Brehmer put a wager on the New Orleans Saints who play the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, and it officially started the sports betting market in Wisconsin.
Oneida Nation Casino
Sports betting will be available in the main casino, and other properties will be able to take sports wagers in the future. Due to geofencing, bettors must be in the casinos to partake in the action as mobile sports betting is only allowed in the casino. Customers can also head over to the kiosks and place a wager through an employee waiting to help.
What’s Next For Wisconsin in Regards to Sports Betting
Oneida Casino in Green Bay is not far from Lambeau Field, and bettors will be able to place bets on the Green Bay Packers as they have a comfortable lead in the NFC North with a 9-3 record. The fans will also be able to bet on other Wisconsin sports like the Milwaukee Bucks as they look to repeat as NBA Champions.
There is one exception to what wagers can be placed. Betting on collegiate sports is allowed, but wagering on local collegiate sports is prohibited as many athletic directors have been against the idea of betting on college games or college player props. They believe it could negatively affect student-athletes while focusing on school and during the game.
A study released this summer by the New American Gaming Association found that sports bettors are moving away from illegal bookies as more states are offering more legal options. The Oneida Nation has a partnership with International Gaming Technology which provides the software and infrastructure to make the sports betting experience even more convenient and entertaining.
Potawatomi officials who operate a casino in Milwaukee have a similar idea to push for a similar compact amendment with the state. The nine other tribal casinos have not stated their plans in regards to sports betting. Lawmakers from both parties have expressed their support to expand sports betting in the state.
This of course this will take time.
