Mohegan Digital Betting Platform Being Launched in Connecticut
On Wednesday, Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, which operates Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut, unveiled its mobile sports betting and casino platform. Mohegan Digital will be the company’s first step into the world of online gaming.
Sports betting was approved in May in Connecticut, and the goal is for the market to launch by football season. The new sports betting laws apply to Mohegan and Foxwoods Resort which the Mashantucket Pequot Tribes operate.
Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment President and CEO Ray Pineault showcased the app on Wednesday.
He said, “As legal sports betting continues to expand in the US, the timing was right for us to launch Mohegan Digital.”
Details of Mohegan Digital
Foxwoods’ mobile skin will be operated by DraftKings, so residents are aware of the app through DFS. Kambi will run Mohegan Digital, but it will feature Mohegan branding.
Kambi is one of the best technology providers in the global gaming market. The app will first launch in Connecticut, but Mohegan Gaming aims to expand to other states in the coming years.
Rich Roberts will serve as president of Mohegan Digital. He served as an advisor for RSD Consulting, where he supported clients who dealt with sports digital media, regulated iGaming, and esports.
Mohegan Gaming kept the name very simple for the sportsbook and iGaming platform. This strategy has proven to be efficient in the legal industry because people have been able to relate to gaming brands.
A prime example of this is Caesars Entertainment starting Caesars Online for sports betting and iGaming.
In betting, branding is critical to attract bettors, and Mohegan will be in heavy competition with Foxwoods and the Connecticut Lottery.
Expectations for Mohegan Digital
Mohegan Sun is a superior casino to Foxwoods. Foxwoods is larger, but most residents believe that Mohegan is nicer. This will help give Mohegan Digital some presence against DraftKings, which will represent Foxwoods.
Connecticut has a major advantage relative to border states which should help Mohegan attract bettors. Massachusetts does not offer sports betting, and it’s unclear when legislation will be passed in the state.
Rhode Island and New York do have sports wagering, but both markets are limited compared to the future industry in Connecticut. Rhode Island is a single provider state, so operators juice lines because of the monopoly.
Mobile sports betting has not launched in New York, but it has passed. Operators are expected to bid on licenses for the remainder of 2021.
However, Connecticut has full interactive casinos with slots, table games, poker, and sportsbooks. This is something New York cannot compete with based on state regulations.
Mohegan and Foxwoods have set the standard for casino gaming since the nineties in Connecticut. People have traveled to the properties from out of state for years to partake in the gambling experience.
The experience will only improve once sports betting goes live in the state with retail and mobile sportsbooks.
