Sports Betting May Enter the State of California With the Help of the New Proposals
Voters in the state of California will have the opportunity to sign their names to a $100 million sportsbook-led proposed initiative that could bring sports betting to the state. California could have sports betting on the ballot for next year which may include up to three ballots as two still need the required number of signatures.
The Tribes Seek to Have Full Control of the California Sports Betting Market
Some of California’s gaming tribes want to be sure who dictates the online aspect of sports betting because the state’s market promises a very lucrative business. Several tribes which include the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians, Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria, and Wilton Rancheria tribes sent a letter to other federally recognized tribes in regards to coming up with a different proposal to keep sports betting under their control.
The letter outlined that would allow mobile and in-person betting in gaming facilities statewide. The earliest launch date would be set for September 1, 2023, The tribes would also like sports betting giants like DraftKings and Fanduel, and BetMGM from operating within the state’s borders.
They believe it will generate billions of dollars for the state and also could employ up to 125,000 if they stay self-sufficient. If lawmakers move forward with the bill, it would make the fourth proposed online sports betting initiative that California voters could see on their ballots in 2022. The letter portrayed that If the DraftKings Measure or the Cardrooms Measure passes in November 2022, it would be a major threat to the existence of tribal gaming.
The first initiative is already to be a part of the ballot as it is supported by a dozen tribes. The California Legalize Sports Betting on American Indian Lands had already been certified earlier this year as they surpassed one million required.
The proposal will allow sports wagers to take place on their lands while putting some retail sportsbooks at specific racetracks in the state. Roulette and other games will be allowed on tribal lands will also be allowed if new tribal land after a new tribal contact was reached.
Residents will be allowed to wager on an array of different sports including out-of-state collegiate teams. In the proposal betting on in-state college sports will be prohibited for the time being.
Reputable Sportsbooks Giants Want to Push Another Initiative
Tribes are usually in no rush to jumpstart the process of legalizing sports betting in a particular state, but if an initiative is slated on a ballot, all it needs is majority support. The “California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Support Act” is one of the proposed sports betting 2022 ballot. This has been an issue the state has dealt with for quite a while and is currently backed by DraftKings, BetMGM, Fanduel, and other reputable sportsbooks that want to operate in the state.
Should this measure pass, California may become the first state to pledge potential sports betting revenue to help fund the fight against homelessness and also making mental health a priority. This proposal will also have to meet the required number of signatures.
