Bianca Andreescu Suffers Ankle Injury at Miami Open
Bianca Andreescu suffered a gruesome ankle injury during the second set of her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova on Monday at the Miami Open.
Andreescu was experiencing a successful week in Miami prior to her injury. Andreescu had taken down young star Emma Radacanu and world #10 Maria Sakkari before having to retire in the round of 16. Before this week, Andreescu had been experiencing a difficult start to her 2023 season that has been decorated with injuries and mental health issues.
What The Sportsbooks Have to Say
Andreescu is ranked #31 in the world but when she went up against world #10 Maria Sakarri, Andreescu’s odds to win the match were quite short, as she was listed at +110. The translation of what this means is that sportsbooks feel she is a much better player than her current ranking would indicate.
Injury Update
Andreescu provided fans with an update via twitter today: “results show that I’ve torn 2 ligaments in my left ankle. It’s tough to say exactly how long it will take, but let’s just say it could’ve been much worse!! I’m going to take it day by day, and I am optimistic that with the right work, rehab, and preparation, I’ll be back on the court soon. Rehab process has already started and will continue to give updates. Love you all.”
Injury History
Andreescu is a player that has taken time off from tennis for a variety of injuries, most notably her mental health break in place of the Australian open as the 2023 season began. One can only speculate how Andreescu will bounce back from her injury in Miami – both mentally and physically.
The rehabilitation process will certainly test Andreescu’s will to return to tennis, both mentally and physically. She has conquered situations like this before, however, and I expect her to come out the other side of the process as an even more mature player.
