MLS Pick: Inter Miami CF vs New England Revolution
Inter Miami CF will play host to the New England Revolution on Wednesday, July 21, at 7:30 pm EST. This matchup will be a test of the range of skill in the MLS‘ Eastern Conference. New England sits atop the Eastern Conference in first place with 27 points and a +5 goal differential through 14 games, while Inter Miami is at the bottom with eight points and a -8 goal differential through only 11 games.
New England may be in their worst form of the season, going three games without a win before they pulled out a 1-0 win against an Atlanta United team going through a coaching change. They have won two out of their last five, losing two games to Toronto and FC Dallas. Inter Miami has a fairly simple history over their past five matches, losing all five to both good and bad teams. Suffice to say, Inter Miami has room to improve.
Inter Miami’s Ways to Win
Their attack is their biggest weakness. They scored one over their last five and have scored nine goals across their eleven games. They are currently the only team not to hit double digits in terms of scoring so far. Manager Phil Neville needs a new strategy. It does seem a little odd that Gonzalo Higuain remains on the bench despite being the most accomplished Inter Miami player as well as the only player to have scored more than once this season. Look for him to start if Inter Miami wants a chance to put up a fight.
It’s never a clean fix, especially in the middle of the season, to change formations, but maybe Inter Miami needs to add a little imbalance. They play in a 4-2-3-1, which offers a lot of attacking opportunities while remaining both strong in the midfield and balanced in defense. However, on the attack, their outside attacking midfielders need to really get wide, and they don’t seem to be creating that overload on the wings.

The Revolution should feel confident coming into this game, and that confidence needs to manifest itself in an intense first 15 minutes. New England should press high and set the tempo of the game. Then, once it naturally settles, they might have an early lead or at least the momentum. Bruce Arena is no stranger to matchups like these, and although New England has not been at their top form, they need to keep it simple here to win.
They are without their starting goalkeeper Matt Turner who is away with the US Men’s Soccer Team at the Gold Cup, which is always very difficult to deal with. Brad Knighton is a fine replacement with plenty of experience under his belt, so Inter Miami will still have some work to do against the Revolution.
Inter Miami CF vs New England Revolution Pick
This isn’t a difficult call to make. If Inter Miami wins this game, it would be a surprise to everyone across the league. They have yet to click as a squad this season, and it does not add up that it will happen against one of the best teams in the MLS right now. Inter Miami can consider this game a win if they manage to put one or two away.
