  • Take the moneyline on a draw at +220
  • Goal total under 2.5 at -125

Liverpool will host Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday, August 28 with a 12:30 EST kick off. The start of the season for these two powerhouses have been just about the same. Both scored five goals. Both gave up no goals against. Both have won their first two matches. They are identical.

Chelsea’s great start came first with a 3-0 win against Crystal Palace and then an equally strong performance against Arsenal where Lukaku showed he was very much at home back in London. They will have Kante and Ziyech returning for this one as well, so they are ready and prepared for their first heavyweight matchup of the English Premier League this season.

Liverpool have dealt out two losses to two of the weaker EPL squads in Burnley and Norwich City, but their attack still remains one of the strongest in the world. They didn’t end last season on a great note, but with a much healthier squad, Liverpool are a definite top four contender.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction: MoneyLine

It is easy to look at Chelsea’s last game against Arsenal and say that Lukaku’s transition back to the EPL was smooth and he is at home already in the Tuchel system. It is never this easy. Against a fully healthy Van Dyke, Lukaku won’t be able to control the box and back down defenders into the goal.

This Liverpool team that dipped in performance at the end of last season is just about completely healthy. It will by no means be a walk in the park for either of these teams whose offenses and defenses have been on. This is really the first test for both of these teams. These early season matchups between title contenders are always tense and result in a tug-o-war with no team ever really pulling out the edge.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction: Total

For similar reasons as to the moneyline draw prediction, early fixtures of this kind are not shoot-outs. While both of these teams have scored plenty of goals so far, they haven’t faced a team of each other’s caliber. There is always a level of respect to the opponent that defences give and the attacks, while strong, don’t always prevail.

Kante is back for Chelsea and will boster the edge of that midfield that Liverpool really look to attack from. I can’t find an edge that either of these teams have in this game. Strong offense matched by an equally strong defense from both sides. For that, and the more specific prediction that the game will end in a 1-1 draw, taking the under total is the play here.
