Italy will host Switzerland in Rome at the Stadio Olimpico for their second match of Group A. The match is slated for Wednesday, June 16, with a 3:00 pm EST kickoff. Italy sits in first place currently after a thrashing of Turkey, who came into the tournament with high hopes. Switzerland played to a tight 1-1 draw with Wales.

Euro 2020: Italy’s Ways to Win

Italy had a fantastic showing in the first game and was quite stellar. They had had a lot of success in their training before this tournament and appeared to not have many weaknesses. As a team, they haven’t given up a goal in over five games. They have won nine straight games. They are putting together complete performances. 

It is easy to say Italy just needs to keep playing how they have been, but what does that look like? It looks like Jorginho is remaining smooth and comfortable on the ball in midfield to dominate the tempo. Spinazzola needs to keep being a nuisance. He was fantastic against Turkey, rotating out of the left defensive position and coming into the midfield at the perfect moments to create imbalances.

In attack, Immobile and Insigne got goals for themselves and continue to be quick, but it took them quite a while to get those goals. An own goal helped them out, but they need to be a little more effective and take some shots from range. They have plenty of talent that can take those shots, but they were waiting for a perfect chance. They need to strike the ball from range more, especially if Switzerland sits in like Turkey did.

Switzerland put together a solid performance against Wales, but they are going to be facing a much stronger lineup in Italy. Turkey played an incredibly defensive style of soccer against Italy, and it kept them off the score sheet for a while, but they weren’t able to make much happen. Switzerland surely has plenty more attacking prowess, so I think they can give themselves a very good chance if they sit in a little bit and look for counter-attacking opportunities.

Italy have some slow and aging center backs in Chiellini and Bonucci that Embolo can really take advantage of. Get the ball to Embolo on fast breaks and let him fly. Use Embolo in build-up play to hold the ball and turn. Embolo will unlock this game and has to be looked for early and often.

Switzerland have talent and can make Italy sweat. Embolo knows how to find the back of the net, but Switzerland might not have the defensive talent to hold Italy out of their net. Italy give up their first goal in a very long time to Embolo, either of a set piece or a rare mistake in the box, but Italy will have too much to handle and go up two or three goals.
