No. Brett Favre is not coming back to the NFL, but his comments recently have made headlines across the league. Favre, the Green Bay Packers legend first made headlines speaking about Aaron Rodgers following the Packer’s loss to Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship. 

Rodgers Out in Green Bay?

After the crushing playoff exit for Green Bay Rodgers made it seem like his future in Green Bay was potentially in doubt. Favre doesn’t see number 12 anyone other than Green Bay next season.

“I wouldn’t pay much attention to it,” said Favre. “I think the frustration, disappointment, hurt, pain, all were in that soundbite.”

From afar, Favre knows how important Rodgers is to the Packers especially after coming off what many expect to be an MVP season.

“Look, there’s no way the Packers would do anything to jeopardize losing Aaron, unless Aaron just chooses to retire, which I would be shocked.”

At 37, Rodgers proved this season that he still has what it takes to be an elite quarterback and retirement should not even be a question.

Favre Comments on Watson

Favre is now back in the headlines after speaking about disgruntled Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson, the clear leader of the Houston Texans has been very upset this offseason because the Texans have not used his input in the recent hiring of GM Nick Caserio and Head Coach David Culley. 

For Watson, his frustration is understandable as he is the best player and leader of a subpar football team that seemingly hasn’t done very much to help him. Before the 2020 NFL season, the Texans traded Watson’s top receiving target Pro Bowl receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals.

“You get paid a ton of money to do a certain job, and just do it, and let the chips fall where they may,” said Favre. No doubt, Watson has put his head down and done his job ever since coming into the league but it seems things are boiling over. “I think we make too much money to voice an opinion, but I’m not saying he’s wrong,” Favre said. “Again I think it’s a different day and time.”

This is the most important part of the entire quote. Favre is completely right, the league and the players act in a completely different way since Favre played the game. Back when Favre played you signed a contract and you almost always played through the end. Today, players in all major sports leagues seemingly have all the power if they are elite at their job and pick and choose where they want to play. 

Backlash following Favre’s Comments

Watson’s agent David Mulugheta responded to Favre’s comments on Twitter saying, “Brett should probably stop throwing stones from that glass house he’s sitting in.” For context, Brett Favre’s relationship with the Green Bay Packers went south late in his career leading to a trade to the New York Jets. Watson has listed the Jets as one of his preferred destinations.

Sometimes it can be frustrating for players when former players go out publicly and make comments about other players’ contracts. I feel that Favre is allowed to make any comments he wants about quarterbacks because of his resume. Favre is a Hall of Fame, Super Bowl-winning quarterback with 508 career touchdown passes and 71,838 passing yards.

Just like how television personalities can voice their opinions so can Favre. I feel that he receives backlash because he is a former player who late in his career changed teams multiple times and retired and unretired multiple times. I don’t see Favre backing down anytime soon as I feel he is very knowledgeable about the game and audiences love to hear what he thinks.
