Toledo Rockets 2022 College Football Preview

Toledo Rockets 2022 College Football Preview

Toledo Rockets 2022 going into this season with high expectations. Last year they  were 8-4 on the year and were 6-2 in the conference. They led the MAC in scoring with 33.4 points per game and are still loaded on the offensive side of the ball in 2022. Look for sophomore quarterback Dequan Finn to be the undisputed leader for head coach Jason Candle.

Finn tossed for 18 touchdowns and ran for nine other last season. His help is back with four starters coming back. Senior tackle Mitchell Berg and junior guard Tyler Long. Micah Kelly and Jacquez Stuart should get the most carries for the Rockets.Receivers are led by junior Devin Maddox. He had 41 catches for 567 yards and four touchdowns. Matt Landers returns with team best 2.7 yards per catch.Tight ends include senior Jamal Turner and junior Anthony Torres.

The Toledo Rockets had the best defense in the MAC last year and return a solid core. They allowed 21.8 points per game  and could be better in 2022 with five all-conference players returning. Desjuan Johnson had 70 tackles and 4.5 sacks and linebacker and three time all-MAC Jamal Hines is the core with his 88 tackles and 10 sacks. the third head of this trio is senior Dyontae Johnson with 86 tackles and ALL-MAC  selection.

The kicking team is looking for a new punter and freshman Jonathan Banks is the leading candidate to fill that spot while Thomas Cluckey returns as the placekicker. Punt returns could be a selection of Maddox ot Stuart as both are capable.

Head coach Jason Candle is back for his seventh year and has a good 45-27 recor but the fan base wants a MAC championship. In five of the previous six years, the Rockets have had the best recruiting class in the MAC but no championships. The Toledo Rockets 2022 must do a better job of finishing games and capture the title.

The schedule for 2022 is top heavy with their best competition. Let’s hope they can be patient. the Rockets  go to Ohio State for the week 3 and then San Diego State the following week. The conference games appear harder for a few weeks before they should get a winning streak going in MAC football.
