The Two teams in the thick of the AL Wild Card race will meet when the New York Yankees host the Seattle Mariners for a four-game set this weekend.

HISTORY: New York won two of three games at Safeco Field last month.

Mariners

Seattle (58-52) bounced back from a tough five-game stretch by taking two out of three games from the Tampa Bay Rays on the road. This four-game set in the Bronx will be huge as both the Mariners and the Yankees sit three games back in the AL Wild Card picture.

Tyler Anderson will make his second start for the Mariners after being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates at the deadline. He gave up three runs in five 1/2 innings of work. The sixth-year pitcher is 5-8 on the season, with a 4.35 ERA, his best since his rookie season.

Marco Gonzales will like to start Friday’s matchup, while staff ace Chris Flexen will get the call on Saturday. Gonzales has regressed a bit after recording winning records in his first three years in Seattle. This season, he’s 3-5 and he’s posting a career-high 5.15 ERA. Flexen has broken out and becomes the Mariners’ best pitcher this season. The fourth-year right-hander is 10-5 on the season with a 3.75 ERA.

Third baseman Ty France has been in fine form. He’s recorded a hit in eleven of his past twelve games, and he leads Seattle in batting average (.277). Shortstop J.P. Crawford leads the team in hits (108) and he’s recorded multiple hits in five of his last eight games.

Outfielder Mitch Haniger is coming off a three-hit game against the Rays. He leads the Mariners in home runs (25), and he’s on pace to set a career-high. Longtime Mariner Kyle Seager remains a steady presence at the plate and he continues to record timely hits. He’s tallied an RBI in nine of his last ten games, and he’s hot 22 homers this season. Inconsistencies from the back of the lineup has been an issue for Seattle, as injuries have knocked out a handful of reliable bats.

Yankees

New York (57-49) is picking up steam at the right time. After a tough four-game set at Fenway, the Yankees have won seven of their last night games. The addition of first baseman Anthony Rizzo has led to a surge offensively. They have all of the momentum heading into this series at home, and with a trip to Chicago looming, they will need to stay sharp here.

With Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery out due to COVID-19 protocols, reliever Nestor Cortes will be called to make another bullpen start. He was solid in his last outing against Tampa Bay, only giving up one run over five innings and tossing five strikeouts.

Andrew Hearney will look to bounce back from a rough first impression with the Yankees in the third game. He only lasted four innings at home against the Orioles, while giving up six hits and four runs.

The Yankees have finally got it going as of late. The acquisitions of Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo have bolstered and recharged the lineup. Rizzo has come in hot after nine years in Chicago, homering in three of his first six games, while recording multiple hits as well.

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are still intimidating power presences at the plate, and they both homered in the 13-1 thumping of the Orioles. Judge leads the team with 22 homers, while they both have 50 RBIs apiece. DJ Lemahieu leads the team in hits (105), and he’s coming off of a four RBI game. Gleybar Torres is riding a four-game hit streak.

Mariners vs Yankees Prediction

This four-game set could have playoff implications down the line. The Yanks are really hot at the plate, and it makes you wonder if the Mariners will be able to keep up. The questions within the rotation are temporary, but missing Cole and Montgomery should have an effect on this series. In the first game, trusting the Yankees hot bats feels like the way to go, so bet on New York to take the opening contest and take the over.

If Marco Gonzales gets the call Tuesday, the New York lineup could expose the vulnerable pitcher and they could win their fourth straight game. When Chris Flexen takes the mound, it will give the Mariners a lot of upset appeals, but be careful of the young pitcher in the Bronx.
