Noble Damsel Stakes Quick Picks

The $200,000 Noble Damsel Stakes at a mile over the Belmont turf drew a large field of ten older fillies and mares, with one also eligible for the main track only. The event is billed as race 8 of 10, with post time scheduled for 4:21 p.m. EDT.
Let’s take a quick look at the horses most likely to hit the board.

#10 Tamahere (9-5)

Tamahere is the leading money earner and the class of the race. She captured the Sands Point (G2) over this course and distance in her U.S. debut but didn’t see the winner’s circle in until she dominated the 1 1/16 mile Violet Stakes by 7 1/4 lengths in her last start at Monmouth. The Chad Brown trainee switched from a closer to a pacesetter and cuts back to a mile, where she has won or placed in six of eight starts. Win contender.

#6 Love And Thunder (5-1)

Love and Thunder flourished on the firm turf since shipping to Chad Brown’s barn from Great Britain in August. It took four narrow defeats until Love and Thunder broke through with a 4 1/2 length victory in her last start at seven furlongs after switching from a one-run closer to a pace presser. The trainer and jockey combo of Brown and Jose Ortiz are hot – they’ve paired to hit the board in three of their last four races. Win contender.

#5 Shifty She (9-2)

Although Shifty She lost her last two starts by a combined 3 1/2 lengths, the 5-year-old mare has won five of nine lifetime. In her last start, the Saffie Joseph, Jr. trainee had an excuse in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf (G3), racing wide and farther back than she would have liked. The course can be difficult to navigate since the stretch drive is uphill. Although Shifty She needs to prove she can win away from Gulfstream Park, she must be included as one of two confirmed pacesetters. Exotics.

#3 High Opinion (3-1)

High Opinion has won only twice in nine career starts, but she’s a good bridesmaid, having finished second four times. She was last seen missing the victory by a slender nose in the 1 1/16 mile Ballston Spa (G2. Before that, the Tony Dutrow trainee beat Love and Thunder by a half-length in a one-mile allowance race. Unfortunately, High Opinion is a one-run closer, and she may not get the pace set up she needs to win. Exotics.

#9 Risky Mischief (15-1)

Risky Mischief has hit the board in seven of nine career starts, including two at Belmont, and hasn’t finished out of the money since switching to the turf last August. She can be placed anywhere in the field and still run her race; However, the Jeremiah Englehart trainee has been hit-or-miss against lesser foes. Longshot exotics.
