Competitors will be challenged by the par 71 course that is a total of 7,643 yards forcing long hitters to whip out their driver more than usual. Those who are efficient in distance and accuracy off-the-tee will have a much easier path to success at Torrey Pines.
Torrey Pines Challenges
The U.S. Open is often thought to be the toughest major for a professional golfer to win. It becomes an even more difficult quest to accomplish as the host of this year’s U.S. Open takes place at the highly demanding Torrey Pines golf course.
The course runs along the San Diego coastline featuring extremely thick roughs, narrow fairways, and small greens. With 14 of the 18 holes containing greenside bunkers, it makes it that much more enticing for ball strikers to go pin hunting.
Driving it well off the tee doesn’t mean anything if the putter isn’t hot in the U.S. Open. Considering a decent amount of the greens possess scary slopes, it will be crucial for golfers to avoid any possibility of a three-putt. Players with the ability to execute a clean bunker save or smooth chip shot will have the best chances of ending on top of the leaderboard on Sunday.

U.S. Open Predictions | Best Bets
Brooks Koepka (+1400)
If you’re placing bets on this year’s U.S. Open then it’s hard to ignore the potential money Brooks Koepka can earn you. Considering Koepka has won two out of the last four U.S. Opens and placed 2nd at the PGA Championship just a few weeks ago makes him a likely candidate to perform well this weekend.
Torrey Pines is a course that works to benefit Koepka’s game. With the ability to consistently drive the ball over 300 yards and quickly erase any previous mistakes from his mind, a lot of his play will revolve around his work around the greens. Being happy with a 2-putt at Torrey will play a large role in any success Koepka had this upcoming weekend.
Xander Schauffele (+1400)
Phil Mickelson won’t be the only hometown hero competing at this year’s U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Growing up in San Diego, Schauffele has had plenty of cracks at figuring out the long, tough course.
Sometimes in a major championship, common knowledge of the course and its layout can help earn a golfer a top place finish. Comfort will be found at Torrey Pines for Schauffele as no elements of the course will come as a shock to the top 10 golfer in the world.
Not to mention the previous success Xander has had in the most recent U.S. Opens. In his four starts, he has four top-10 finishes, three top-5 placements, and hasn’t finished worse than sixth overall.
Besides from the fact that this is Schauffele’s home territory and a place he’s had a lot of success, there’s also the argument that it’s just simply his time. Consistently finishing in the top 10 at any given major gives him the edge coming into the weekend. It’s been his time for a long time, and that time will come this weekend. Just watch.
Those are the two best bets for this weekend’s U.S. Open predictions. With a packed field of 156 golfers competing this weekend it promises to be a good one. This may even call for some extra holes to be played and wind up heading to a playoff.
How wild would it be if it were Koepka and Schauffele squaring up against one another? Unlikely, but certainly possible. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
