FanDuel Bringing Tech Operations to Atlanta
FanDuel is one of the largest sports betting platforms in the United States. The sportsbook, along with DraftKings, has dominated the legal wagering industry. FanDuel made a massive announcement on Tuesday that will continue to help the sportsbook and daily fantasy provider grow to insurmountable heights.
The Announcement
On Tuesday, gambling company FanDuel announced that it would invest at least $15 million and hire more than 900 people for its new Atlanta office. The Atlanta office will be focused on product development and technology operations.
This new effort by FanDuel is going to provide benefits for the company and the Atlanta area. Nine hundred jobs will help Atlanta transition from the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, the company’s investment will help the sportsbook stand above the competition in the legal American wagering market.
FanDuel, a subsidiary of Flutter Entertainment PLC, is a leading sports betting provider in the United States. The company was able to gain traction quickly in the legal betting industry because of the notoriety of the brand.
FanDuel Background
FanDuel was a daily fantasy app before the company added sports betting. This had helped the brand grow since 2018, when the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was repealed.
FanDuel is available in ten states, but not Georgia. State lawmakers have not legalized sports betting even though the four major sports teams in the state were advocating for the form of gambling.
This decision by FanDuel will bring money to the state through taxes. FanDuel probably hopes the new office in Atlanta will help convince the legislature to legalize sports betting in the future.
FanDuel is also an industry leader for retail sports betting facilities. The company has collected more than 12 million users in the United States. The FanDuel headquarters is in New York, with smaller offices in Los Angeles, Orlando, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Atlanta is the latest city to be added to this worldwide list.
Flutter Entertainment PLC Took Notice
FanDuel has surged since sports betting was legalized in 2018. Flutter Entertainment PLC, a British company, took notice of the growth and bought a massive stake in the sports betting organization.
Flutter began its initial acquisition of FanDuel in 2018 when the company purchased 58% of the company. Last year, Flutter finished its goal of controlling FanDuel when the company bought out the minority shareholders for $4.2 billion.
These purchases have made Flutter a vast amount of money because of FanDuel’s expansion since 2018.
The FanDuel Office
Economic development officials do not know where FanDuel’s Atlanta office will be located yet. The state has promised FanDuel job training assistance, but other details of the agreement are still unknown.
More details will be revealed when an office location is determined. The company hopes that Georgia’s public universities will tailor classes toward the skills that FanDuel is looking for at its Atlanta office. This would allow FanDuel to recruit future workers on college campuses.
FanDuel was attracted to Atlanta because of the diverse workforce in the city. FanDuel will be hard to overtake in the legal sports betting industry if the office is a success.
