Texas Tech Team Preview
Texas Tech had their 3 game winning streak snapped on Sunday against Baylor. The Red Raiders were defeated 88-73. Guard Kyler Edwards led in all stats for Texas Tech, Edwards had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Tech shot 46% from the field and 50% from the 3 point line. A high percentage shooting day like that should almost always equal a victory but Tech being dominated on the boards 36-22 held them from the win.
Texas Tech is 2-0 this season against Texas. In the first meeting, this season Tech won a close game 79-77. Mac McClung was a force for the Red Raiders, the Georgetown transfer scored 22 points to go with 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Texas scored 48 points and held a 10 point lead going into halftime, but a mix of turnovers and an abysmal 58.1% (18/31) free throw percentage generated only 28 in the second half for the Longhorns, costing them the game.
These teams faced off again two weeks ago on February 27th. The Red Raiders came out on top 68-59, Guards Kevin McCullar, Mac McClung Kyler Edwards, Terrance Shannon Jr, and Forward Marcus Santos-Silva all scored 10+ plus points. Statistically, the Red Raiders and Longhorns put up similar numbers but just like the first matchup, a poor showing from the free-throw line prevented the Longhorns from winning.
Texas Team Preview
Texas is Back! …. To being a basketball school. The Longhorns put together a nice record this season finishing third in a competitive Big 12 conference. The offense was the powerhouse for this team, often having to carry a lackluster defense. Offensively the Longhorns averaged 75 points per game this season and shot 45% from the field.
The Longhorns defense was the difference-maker for them on Sunday though, in a 76-64 win against TCU the Longhorns forced 22 turnovers.
Texas wants to prove themselves and avoid the sweep from their rival, they are coming in on a three-game winning streak with their last loss February 27th to none other than Texas Tech. The Longhorns’ aspirations for a deep postseason run will be tested immediately, but a victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders would be an impressive first step.
