It’s Time; Bet McDavid to Win the Hart
Connor McDavid currently sits at -340 to win the Hart Trophy which for any other player, in any other sport, seems like a terrible bet. However, McDavid is doing things in the NHL right now that no other player in professional sports is even coming close to.
Connor McDavid is currently on pace to score over 150 points this season only something 5 other players in NHL history have accomplished (Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemeuix, Bernie Nichols, Steve Yzerman, and Phil Esposito).
If McDavid becomes the 6th player to do so this season, as well as lead the league in goals for the first time in his career he will win the Hart Trophy unanimously. Yes the odds are not great right now but it’s free money at this point.
McDavid is easily the most dominant player at his sport in professional sports right now. Patrick Mahomes is great, but he’s not doing what McDavid is doing relative to his sport. The only season in recent memory that can compare to McDavid this year is what Aaron Judge did last season.
To put into perspective what 150 points means in the NHL, only 6 players have ever hit 60 home runs in a season in the MLB (Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Maris, and Aaron Judge). However, Aaron Judge still have someone in his sport that was in the argument for MVP, that being Shohei Ohtani.
In the NFL only 6 players have thrown for 45 touchdowns in a season (Dan Marino, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Patrick Mahomes). In the NBA only 5 players have averaged 35 points per game (Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Rick Barry, Kobe Bryant, and James Harden).
These feats in every sport are milestones that 99.9 percent of the time ensure an MVP for the player that achieves it. The thing that makes McDavid’s pace so impressive is it’s supposed to be harder for him to achieve this than any other player for their respective sport.
The NBA has become so fast paced and the percentage of 3-pointers is almost double compared to other eras. The NFL has the most passing friendly rules in their sports history right now and the MLB has had allegations about using juiced baseballs in recent history.
McDavid, however, is on pace to achieve his milestone in an era where goaltending has never been better. The level of skill around him has never been as challenging and yet he still seems to outshine everyone else.
The argument is over: McDavid is the best athlete on the planet right now and getting the best athlete on earth at -340 to win his sports MVP is a steal. The lock of the decade is Connor McDavid winning the NHL’s Hart Trophy and you should not wait any longer to bet on it.
