DraftKings Making Some Moves
DraftKings is one of the biggest names in the legal sports betting industry, and the company has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. The company continues to focus on creating a top online sports betting experience, but two recent announcements focus on the in-person betting scene.
There are very few states with legal betting in which DraftKings doesn’t yet have a presence and that list will get even smaller soon. With retail sports betting available in Maryland, the sportsbook is set to join the group of top competitors.
DraftKings Sportsbook is already up and running in the state of Michigan, but there is going to be a new option for residents of that state. It’s going to be hard to catch up to FanDuel Sportsbook in terms of market share numbers, but DraftKings is doing all that it can to close the gap.
Maryland Gives DraftKings Approval
The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission recently announced that it has moved the retail license application forward for DraftKings. If given final approval, the sportsbook will join a market that already includes the likes of BetMGM and FanDuel, to name a few.
The next step in this process will be a review of the license application by the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission. This group will likely hold a special meeting to grant approval as there is no official meeting scheduled until next month.
Maryland is not looking to launch online sports betting until some point in 2023, but getting entrance into the state is a big step for DraftKings. In the application it was announced that the sportsbook is hoping to offer retail wagering at the Maryland State Fairgrounds.
DraftKings did have to agree to have its financial report reviewed on a yearly basis in Maryland as the committee expressed some concern about the recent financial report from the company.
Sports & Social Coming to Michigan
DraftKings was able to enter into the state of Michigan after partnering with the Bay Mills Indian Community. The company offers online betting in this state, and also has a retail sportsbook set up at the Bay Mills Resort and Casino.
DraftKings is going to be taking a little different route with its upcoming plans in Michigan as it will be opening the first “Sports & Social” location in the Detroit-metro area. This new project is backed by Cordish Companies and it will create an atmosphere that is the first of its kind in the United States.
Sports & Social DraftKings will not feature retail sports betting on-site, but there will be plenty of television screens and a massive odds board. Online sports betting bonuses and promotions will be featured as a way for bettors to place wagers on their mobile device.
According to the announcement that was made earlier in the week, DraftKings and Cordish Companies are also targeting other metro areas such as Nashville and St. Louis.
