Pennsylvania Smashes Sports Betting Record
Another state has reported its sports betting totals for the month of October, and another record was set. This time it came from Pennsylvania, and this state is on track to challenge for the number two spot for the month.
The total sports betting handle for October was $776.3 million, easily smashing the previous record that was set all the way back in January 2021. In January the handle was $615.3 million, but Pennsylvania could be on track to shatter this record again before the end of the year.
Mobile or online betting continues to be the most popular option in Pennsylvania, and the online handle was also a record. Pennsylvania bettors wagered more than $714 million online in October, breaking the previous mark of $579.9 million.
The state of the 2021 NFL season was a big reason for the huge jump in handle, but sportsbooks can also take credit. Operators handed out more than $18 million in promotional money last month, but it accomplished the goal of bringing in more action.
With the massive month of October, Pennsylvania has now gone over the $10 billion mark in total handle in less than three years. The final position of Pennsylvania won’t be official until the remaining states announce their figures as well.
Other Gaming Also Up
Not only did sports betting see massive growth for the month of October, but other forms of gaming were popular as well. Gross gaming revenue for table games set a new state record as the total was $89.1 million in October.
Sports betting tends to get all of the attention in the United States, but online slots in Pennsylvania are bringing in much more action. The handle for interactive slots in Pennsylvania came in at $1.942 billion, which was an increase of 8.4 percent from September.
The handle for retail sports was more than $2.6 billion, and this is easily the most popular form of betting in the state. A number of operators in Pennsylvania offer both online sports betting an an online casino.
Barstool Headed in Wrong Direction
Barstool Sportsbook has become the third most popular sports betting option in Pennsylvania, but that hasn’t led to a ton of revenue for Penn National Gaming. Last month the Barstool Sportsbook total revenue was just $118,849, which was one of the worst in the state.
When it comes to the most popular betting options in the state, FanDuel and DraftKings continues to lead the way. FanDuel accounted for nearly 40 percent of the market share, and DraftKings went over $200 million in monthly handle for the first time.
BetMGM has shifted into fourth place over the last couple of months, but that operator still saw a jump in revenue up to $65.9 million.
